Derek Murphy is the guy who rented a castle in France to host a writer’s retreat for NaNoWriMo in 2016. He hosts the popular experimental author’s blog He has just released a great new book about publishing. If you want to increase your book’s visibility and sales, you should read it.

This book Guerrilla Marketing by Derek Murphy is essential for indie authors in 2017. Hands down, Derek Murphy has created and experimented with some of the most innovative approaches to what a lot of people would call book marketing. However, a lot of what Derek does is actually hard to call marketing, because his methods are simply so unorthodox. He may be revolutionizing marketing, and a year from now, this may be exactly what people are talking about in the book marketing world, but today, it’s easier to say that Guerrilla Publishing is about book propagation.

In the book, Derek expounds on some of the experimental techniques he has been using to quietly build large followings before book launches in order to create a targeted list of genre fans before he releases a book, then when the book is released, Derek offers it to his lists, and many of them become paying customers. Also, the importance of the list in generating early reviews for newly launched books is heavily stressed. Derek shows you how to do all this, and anyone can do it.

There is some amazing methods for boosting your book and brand’s SEO, and ways to make SURE that your books show up first or near first in search results on Google and Amazon. You really need to read this book if you want to understand more about how books are found, categorized and made extremely visible to customers.

One of the best pieces of advice I gathered from Guerrilla Publishing was to decide to write a successful book before putting pen to paper so to speak. In order to succeed as an author, we need to create books that will actually sell cop[ies, and as much as writing for passion is appealing, writing for readers is often a wise choice, since they are the ones who buy our books and pay our bills. I have adopted the mantra Write For Readers since reading this book.

There is an enormous amount of helpful information in this book, and I have barely scratched the surface. Let me just say that I have read about 20 books on the subject of independent self publiishing and the whole business side of being an independent author, and Guerrilla Publishing is in the top 3, along with the Kindle Publishing Bible by Tom Corson-Knowles and The Self Publishing Manual by Dan Poynter.

Plotting an Emotional Journey for Your (Fiction) Readers

Fiction readers are largely interested in going on an emotional journey. Infusing your writing with emotionally-evocative imagery, characters and situations is the best way to get people to continue reading, and to talk about your work afterwards. Invoke emotion on page 1. Don’t stop until the end of the last sentence in the book.

But you can’t just have your book be a nonstop extravaganza of happiness, true love and victory. That’s where the concept of the emotional journey comes in. Thing about this: There have been many, many novels written in the history of the world. As more novels were written, some emerge as more popular than others, and resonate with more readers.. These novels resonate more because of the emotional journeys they take their readers on. Over time, some authors have attempted to distill precisely what kind of emotional journeys readers want from books. Their efforts have resulted in a number of genre-specific Story Templates or Beat Sheets, that recommend certain universal conditions and events that should occur in a story, along with when those conditions and events should occur, for maximum emotional impact.

Most stories are going to include emotional highs and lows, as well as plot twists, or events whose occurrence results in unexpected outcomes that change the overall perception or tone of the story.

This site is for beginners, so I am going to give the best advice I can for beginners. The best advice I can give you as a beginning author is to plot out your story before you write it. This will help you get a feel for story, assist you in scheduling the completion of your book, and view writing your novel as climbing a series of small hills, instead of attempting to scale Mt. Everest.

The basic anatomy of a plot is a series of one-to three-sentences describing events, turning points, and narratives that tell your character’s basic story.


  • A worker drone named Thirty-Seven works in a factory and has no ambition or problems.

  • Thirty-Seven is framed for murder and sent to a desert prison rules by a tyrannical overlord named Devil.

  • Devil’s wife Angel becomes fascinated by Thirty-Seven, and begins following him around.

  • Devil discovers this and sends out a gang of robots to kill Thirty-Seven.

  • Thirty-Seven makes a startling discovery that awakens secret powers he never knew he had.

  • Thirty-Seven defeats the robots sent to kill him, but still cannot defeat Devil, and ends up in prison.

  • He loses hope and gives up on his quest, languishing in prison.

  • Angel receives a secret communication meant for Devil, revealing his weakness to x-rays.

  • Angel assists Thirty-Seven in escaping and acquiring an X-Ray gun, restoring Thirty-Seven’s confidence.

  • Together, Thirty-Seven and Angel defeat Devil with the X-Ray gun.

  • Surprise! The X-Ray gun is also Thirty-Seven’s weakness, and Angel must use her healing powers to save Thirty-Seven, who then loses his superpowers, but ends up ruling the desert prison with Angel anyway. THE END.

See how the reader is taken on an emotional journey? We started out with this basically good character who is perfectly happy going along in his life, not hurting anyone, and then he is framed for murder. This grave injustice endears Thirty-Seven to the reader, who from that point on, wants to see justice served. They want to see the wrong made right. Also, when it is revealed that the villain’s wife is interested in Thirty-Seven, the reader’s emotions rally in support of taking the wife away from the villain, as recompense for what he has done to the hero.

Then the pendulum swings the other way. Our hero is given an advantage, and it seems as though he may be able to beat his rival, but his hopes are dashed and he is thrown into a prison-within-a-prison. There, the reader experiences ego-death, as the hero gives up. Then, when all seems lost, assistance comes and finally, the reader is rewarded for sticking with the hero all this time, as he finally defeats the villain. Then, as an added bonus, the plot is twisted and it is revealed that the same weapon used to defeat the villain is also harmful to the hero. This is where the real nail-biting happens. Will the hero survive, after all he has been through? Will he have to sacrifice himself, freeing the villain’s wife? No. This story gives the reader the ultimate payoff: The Happily Ever After ending. Readers will come away from this story knowing they have been through something, and the subtext is that even in the face of certain defeat, things can work out in unexpected ways for the best.

See how the emotional element drives this entire story forward? That is one of the big advantages of plotting: You get to determine what the emotional highs and lows of the story will be, you get to tell the story through the expression and perception of emotions. Now, all you have to do is fill in the blanks.

When you have your story plotted about, it is time to flesh everything out and turn the plot into a real story. This is done by separating your plot points onto different pages and then writing at least 1,000 words based on each plot point. I recommend more. Of course, sometimes that might not be practical, but as a general rules, it’s a good way to get your story written. Following this method, the more meaningful plot points you have, the longer your manuscript will be.

Another way to write you book, if you do not want to plot it out, is to make up the story as you go along. This can be a little tougher than plotting, but for some authors, it works out just fine. If you choose to write as you go, remember to keep things interesting by maintaining the emotional journey – never let readers stop caring – and you will have a better chance of keeping readers engaged. When I write this way, I always come up with surprises for my characters whenever things start to lag even the slightest bit.

Why You Should Start or Join a Writer’s Group


When I moved to my current city, there was no writer’s group, so I created one. I am so glad I did. I have met some great friends that I might not have otherwise. There is a great sense of community and family between the members of our group. Basically, it’s a small club that gets together once a month at the local library to talk about what we have done as writers, what we are doing now, and what we want to do in the future. It’s great. We get to share ideas and talk about the failures and successes we have had, and in this way, we all learn from each other.

Putting yourself in a room with a bunch of other writers also helps let you know that you are not alone in your desire to write, create and succeed. There are others out there who are wondering if there are others out there, help them find each other.

Another great outcome of a writer’s group can be new collaborations between members. My writer’s group, Skiatook Writers And Poets, (S.W.A.P.) is putting together an anthology that will be released this September at the yearly Pioneer Days Festival. This anthology will include writings from many current and former residents of Skiatook and the surrounding area, and the very existence of this book will help to enrich the culture of our city. I’m proud to be a part of that. As I grow and change as a writer and author, it becomes increasingly important to me to share what I have learned with others, and assist everyone I can as they endeavor to succeed with their own books, blogs, etc. That’s why I created this site.


The Skiatook Writers And Poets group started when I wrote up a one page proposal to the local public library. In the proposal, I asked if I could start a group that would meet once a month to talk about writing. The library approved my proposal and the group was born. Then, I contacted the local newspaper and asked them if they would please run a small feature on our group, which they did, and we had a good turnout for our first meeting, and every meeting after that. The newspaper continues to incude our meeting dates in the monthly calendar of local events, so the group remains visible. New members come and go throughout the year, but we have a solid group that attends every meeting if they can.

One of the biggest things you can do to help your writing career is to continually learn new things about your craft, and starting or joining a writer’s group is a good way to do that. Find out if your town or city has one, and if not, do everyone a favor and get things rolling.


Beginning Authors Advice: Ebooks, Paperbacks and Audiobooks…


When I first started writing a lot in 2007, I had one goal in mind: Publish my first book. Become an Author. The original handwritten manuscript for that book, This Number Speaks took 3 months to write, three months to edit, and three months to get published. That’s nine months, the same length of time as a human pregnancy. And pregnancy is a good analogy for writing and publishing a book, except that instead of the body giving birth, it is the mind that brings new life into the world.

When the book was released, I was overjoyed! I was a published author! However, soon after, I realized what that really meant: That I was now in business and that it would take some real ingenuity to be successful. Sadly, it was years later that I actually started learning the real ins and outs of the publishing industry, but I did eventually learn. Perseverance and persistence, (and postage) are why I am successful now.

So, one of the things that I have learned is that not all readers are the same. Some readers are not even readers, they are listeners. Some people want their books delivered to them on paper, some on screens, some in their ears. That is why it is a very good idea to diversify your publishing portfolio over multiple formats, including (in the future) Virtual Reality and Hologram formats. When you have your book available in more formats it does two great things: It makes your book available in more places, and accessible to more people. This is part of my Magnify and Multiply author business strategy.

Ebooks are easy to publish, easy to buy, and easy to enjoy for readers. You can basically handle the entire process yourself without any outside help whatsoever, including online retailers. You can set up your own store, create your own digital versions of your books, and sell them directly to readers. That is how I started. However, because there are so many people in the world, and every one of those people is a potential reader, it makes sense that we cannot reach all of our potential readers on our own. We need help. We need publicity and reach. When we create a great quality product and people know about it, we make sales, as long as that quality product is something that people are wanting to buy. I mean, I can create a high-quality book about watching the grass grow, or observing the viscous qualities of drying paint, but no one is going to buy it, because those subjects are not interesting to readers. Do your research and find out where your passion for writing and the interests of actual book-buying readers meet.


Paperbacks and hardbacks are the prevailing format in the world of print books. These are wonderful, and cannot be undercelebrated. I love print books. I love LARGE print books, because I have bad vision. When I was a child, there was no such thing as ebooks. If I wanted to do some reading, I would put paper in my hands and look at the ink printed on it. This method of reading is still incredibly popular. There are some places in the world where (believe it or not) they do not have access to ebooks and the internet, and print books are all they have ever had. Some people really like the physical experience of print books. They like holding the book in their hands, turning the pages, being able to put it down, folded open, where they left off reading. There’s nothing at all in the world like the site of a real bookshelf full of real books. That’s something that makes me very happy every time I see it. And, in a technological apocalypse, if for some reason electronics become unusable, paperbacks, hardbacks and other physical formats will be all we have left of literature.


Recently, I started getting into producing audiobooks with narrators on, and I am glad that I did. Audiobooks provide yet another avenue for readers, (read: listeners) to enjoy your work. Not only do audiobooks help low-vision people enjoy and learn from books, but they also free up anyone and everyone to other things while they listen. People listen to audiobooks on their way to work, on cross-country trips, while sitting on places, while exercising, while working, while doing whatever it is they want ot do while listening. The point is, Audiobooks mean freedom! All you need to enjoy audiobooks are ears. You don’t have to hold anything in your hands.  And the experience of working together with narrators can be very rewarding, because voice actors usually do have their own fans and followers, some of whom will crossover and become your fans and followers, because of the collaboration.


The reading and writing revolution will continue. New technologies will emerge that will make ebooks seem quaint in the long run. Virtual Reality and Holograms are the most obvious formats on the horizon, but there will be something else that comes along and makes sense when it does. Mark my words: It will be the authors who embrace these new technologies and formats who will have an edge with readers in the future.


Why Mailing Lists Are Especially Important For Beginning Authors


When you are a Beginning Author just starting out, no one knows who you are. Well, some people do, like your friends, families, coworkers and online social network friends and followers, but unless you are already somehow well known, the vast majority of people on this planet are unaware of your existence. That’s why you need to put together a mailing list. People on your mailing list are people who know who you are and are waiting for news about your writing. Each person on your mailing list will be someone who has intentionally signed up for updates about you and your writing. You will put together this list using automated opt-in forms that compile names and addresses for you, using a service like MailChimp. When your list starts to grow, which it will if you follow the steps I will outline later, you will be ready to start sending out mass mailings to everyone on your list. When you do this, you will want to include freebies like special editions of your book, short stories or articles that only members of your mailing list will receive.

I know that’s a lot to digest, but that is the quickest and clearest way to reach your goal of success as an author. You will eventually have a mailing list comprised of thousands of subscribers. Each time you send out a mass mailing, thousands of people will instantly be given the opportunity to buy your book, read your newest post, watch your newest video, sign up for your latest contest of giveaway. You want to continually give valuable things to the members of your email list. This is why people will stay subscribed, and why they will eventually buy your books. The Law of Reciprocity applies, which means that if you continually give and give and give, then eventually, those your are giving to will want to give something back to you. This urge on the part of your email subscribers will manifest in the form of purchases of your books. This is what the big publishers and authors do, and it is what you need to do in order to achieve your own success, too.


There is a myth that the big publishing houses do all the marketing for their new authors and book releases. This is simply not true. What the big publishing houses do is create availability of titles, and arrange for online and brick-and-mortar distribution, make a few announcements in print media and online and sometimes give cash advances to their authors, hoping that money will be invested in advertising and publicity efforts achieved in large part by the authors themselves or people the author hires to do these things. When you are a traditionally published author, a lot of the weight of publicity and marketing still rests on your shoulders. In light of this, I recommend independent self publishing because you get to keep a much greater percentage of your book royalties, which will allow you to spend more on advertising, which you would very likely have to spend anyway even if you did get traditionally published.

When you have a mailing list, it is important to follow through with everything you have promised to your subscribers. If they are expecting a free download of a book or article, you have to provide it, or you will lose subscribers. That means losing potential sales. Create a mass mailing at least once a month that delivers to your subscribers what has been promised, and change what is promised every month, in order to avoid duplicate giveaways.

When you make commitments in the sign-up statement, make sure that you can meet them without fail. Offering something free is a great way to get people to join your mailing list. You don’t even have to give away your own work. You can give away gift certificates, or content collected from free Creative Commons sources. When your potential subscribers see that you are making them an offer, instead of a giving them a sales pitch, they will be more willing and eager to sign up for your list, and later buy your books.

‘Easy’ Method for Writing Your First Novel

I am going to share with you the easiest method I know of for writing a novel.

This is one of the methods I endorse in my book, Magnify And Multiply.

The first thing you need to do is think of a character. This will be the main character of your book. If you are writing an adventure, this person will be your Hero protagonist. If you are writing Romance, then this person will be a Man or Woman who will eventually (hopefully) find love. Your character could even be a dog, or a child, or a fairy or vampire. Do yourself a favor and create a character you know something about. If you know a lot about playing music, then a musician would be a great character to create. If you know a lot about video games, then a gamer would be a good choice.

When you have your main character chosen, have given them a name, and decided what you want them to look like, create a second character. This could be either a family member, friend, lover or coworker. Someone that will regularly interact with your main character, but is ‘on their side’. Also give this person a name and decide on their appearance. This character can be a little more outside your area of expertise, but they need to be believable. If your main character is a musician, then maybe your second character can be a band manager or recording engineer.

Now, you need to create your third character. This person will be the antagonist. Every story has one. A bad guy. Someone who somehow thwarts the desires of the main character and keeps them from achieving their goal, be it finding a treasure, saving the princess, or simply finding love. Make sure that the antagonist you create has opposing traits to your main character, this will make it easier for readers to understand that the main character and the antagonist are at odds with one another.

Now that you have your three main characters, it is time to do some basic plotting for your novel. Some people do not like to plot their stories out, and they write by the seat of their pants, these people are ‘pantsers’, but for the easiest possible way to write a novel, you need to be a plotter instead. Trust me. You don’t want to get twenty-thousand words into a story and not know where it is going, and then just give up because your story has lost all its momentum. You need to plot if you want to get through the novel writing process without too much indecision or having to wrack your brain, searching for some kind of resolution to the quagmire you have put all your beloved characters into, without knowing how to get them out of it first.

Here is how you can easily plot out your story: Write out 25 – 50 single sentence events that will happen in your story, from beginning to end. To help make your novel more successful, I suggest using ‘beat sheets’ AKA plot templates. There are several genre-specific plot templates that can be observed in nearly every successful book in any given genre. There is a template for Romance stories, and there is a different template for Hero’s Journey / Adventure stories. Each genre has it’s own basic path that the story must follow, in order to keep readers emotionally engaged and thereby interested. Writing fiction is very much about taking readers on emotional journeys of the imagination. If your story does not rouse emotion, it will not succeed. In the history of the world, millions of books have been written, and it is universally accepted that some types of storytelling are much more emotionally engaging that others. That’s why I suggest you follow a beat sheet. History has proven that stories plotted out according to them are more successful than unplotted stories that the author just made up as they went along. So, begin your novel by writing out 25 – 50 distinct plot points, according to the beat sheet or template that best fits the basic idea of your story i.e. Romance, Adventure, Coming of Age, etc.

When you have your 25 – 50 plot sentences written out in order from start to finish, start filling in the spaces between them with 500 – 1000 word sections. These will be come the chapters of your book. When you have done this properly, you will have a novel that is about 20,000 – 75,000 words long. Those numbers are padded because you will very likely write some chapters that are shorter than 500 words, and some that are much longer than 1,000 words. This is normal. Your creative juices will be flowing freely, not having to decide what is going to happen in the story anymore, because you already did that when you plotted it out. Now, you can focus on fleshing everything out, describing everything that happens, and everyone’s reactions, thoughts and actions resulting from events in your story.

That is the lion’s share of the work as far as actually writing your first novel is concerned. When you have your manuscript completed, id will be time to get it edited. When you are just starting out, it might be too expensive for you to hire a professional editor, which can cost one cent a word, making a 75,000 word novel cost 750 dollars to edit. If you cannot afford professional editing in that kind of price range, don’t worry, there are free book editing options.

If you can afford a professional editor, do it. There is really no substitute. They will find things that you will not find. I know you will probably think that your manuscript is perfect when you send it to an editor, but no manuscript is perfect until it is edited, and even then, it really depends on who’s reading it. The goal is to get as close to perfect as possible prior to publication. That is an editor’s job. You may think that they are taking your baby and turning it into something else, and you are right. They are helping your baby grow up. They are taking out things that should not be there and putting in things that should. A good editor will never guess about these things, they will know exactly what they are doing, and your book will be better because of it.

When your first book is properly edited, it is complete and ready to be published, and it is also time for a party.
